Jessica Calo Rodríguez

Postdoctoral researcher Faculty of Biology, University of Vigo

My research addresses the physiological and molecular basis of the regulation of energy metabolism in farmed fish, with particular attention to the mechanisms that shape their response and adaptation to changes in nutritional and environmental conditions.

01 Scientific profile and career path

About me

I graduated in Biology (2018) and completed an MSc in Aquaculture (2020) at the University of Vigo. I began my research career with a contract funded by Healthtech Bio Actives S.L.U. at the University of Murcia, studying the effects of citrus flavonoids on growth, feeding behaviour and welfare in gilthead sea bream, tilapia and trout.

I carried out my PhD at the University of Vigo with an FPU fellowship, supervised by Dr Ayelén M. Blanco and Prof. José Luis Soengas. During this period I collaborated with LUCTA S.A. on nutritional additives for fish and completed research stays in France and Italy. In 2024 I defended my thesis, Characterization of nutrient sensing mechanisms in the gastrointestinal tract involved in the control of feed intake in fish, graded Cum Laude with the International Doctorate mention, and received the Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award.

In 2025 I started my postdoctoral period with a contract linked to the national project INTEGFISH, supervised by Dr Cristina Velasco, and then obtained a Xunta de Galicia postdoctoral fellowship. I am currently completing its two-year period abroad at the INRAE NuMeA unit (Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, France), supervised by Dr Iban Seiliez, studying the role of chaperone-mediated autophagy in the response of rainbow trout to methylmercury exposure.
